VIA
Technologies Inc. has recently disclosed a new PC which is ultra-compact in
design focusing to become part of in-vehicle control, digital signage, and
kiosk markets. The PC is tagged as AMOS-3002 and it is equipped with 1GHz Eden
X2 dual core processor along with the VX900H media system processor which
supports 1080p HD graphics. The thing which makes it really unique from others
is that it operates with a completely fan-less design within a robust chassis having
width of 19.7cm, depth of 10.4cm and height of only 4.9cm.
Moreover,
the detailed specifications include a bunch of COM ports, 6 USB 2.0 ports, a
DIO port, line-in and outputs, VGA and HDMI, in addition to a solid array of
connectivity including dual Gigabit ethernet, and optional 3G & WiFi via a
MiniPCIe expansion slot. To make it slim the storage is provided through a
Cfast slot for a SATA interface Flash drive, though an optional storage
sub-system expansion chassis provides support for a standard 2.5-inch SATA
drive.
VIA
claims their smart machine is designed to survive temperatures between -4F and
140F along with 50 Gs' worth of shock, since it is targeted for installation in
tight spaces and functions in moving vehicles when used to power an
infotainment system.
As
the company is likely to work directly with OEMs building embedded applications,
so at the moment nothing can be said about its launch date or price. But it is
for sure that the computer is capable enough to be used with Windows Embedded,
Windows CE, or Linux. However, it is interesting to see companies like VIA working
on the production of such tiny and presumably affordable, yet capable
computers.
