Today,
Microsoft has announced officially the termination of mainstream support for
Windows Vista operating systems, which was announced in July 2005 and released
worldwide on 30th January, 2007. This is in compliance to the policy of the
company that the mainstream support is offered for a minimum of 5 years from
the date of the product’s general availability or for 2 years after the next
operating system has been released, whichever is longer. In this case, the 5
year time duration has been applied to mainstream support however the successor
Windows 7 was released more than 2 years ago.
Though
the extended support option is also available but it only accommodates
commercial customers by prolonging the support time to 2 more years after the
second successor Operating System has been released. Despite of the fact that
Microsoft extends support for up to 10 years after a product launch in special
cases, but for Vista it was set to expire on 11th April, 2012.
Apparently
Vista has been graded pretty low in terms of general perception and technically
PC World reviewed it as the biggest tech dissatisfaction of the year 2007, while
InfoWorld categorized it as the second nastiest tech dud of all-time.
The company shock by the
feedback collected through the technical product reviews and customer complaints
which were nicely handled in Windows 7 released in late 2009. But this product
which is claimed to be the latest Microsoft operating system is fixed to expire
later this year with the launch of Windows 8.
